What She Is

The sky was a clear and transparent blue that paled as it drew closer to the horizon and reached the slopping dunes of sand. Her eyes narrowed, a hand lifting to shade her gaze as a dappled shadow stretched out, covering her skin in a vein work of black. She turned, the sand sifting between her toes and she marveled at the cool temperature of the malleable surface when the heat of the sun settled over her neck and shoulders. Rabbit’s brows slopped downward as she caught sight of the angular tree drawing her into its shadow.

She stepped closer, a hand reaching out to trail pale fingers over the rough bark and a pointed chin rose, gaze locking on the lifeless limbs that towered over her petite frame. She stared through those branches toward the brilliance of the sun and she closed her eyes, throwing the world around her into darkness. A crackling behind her forced those green eyes to open and she noticed instantly that the world had faded to night.

Rabbit turned, saw the scattered flames of a poorly constructed fire and moved toward it. Knelt before its warmth and caught sight of a swaying shadow through the rising smoke and frowned as that shadow leaned forward and the fire cast light across a painted face. Rabbit sighed and leaned closer to the flames. “Who are you?

“We are one.”

Her answer forced Rabbit’s brows lower and she tried again. “Who am I?”

The other woman shifted, rising above the flames to look down at her and Rabbit’s gaze flicked over her muscular framed wrapped in thin fabric. The pale clothe looked translucent against her dark skin and more markings covered her form. She inclined her head and rose as well, met that dark gaze with her own as the woman stated with a shake of her head. “You are asking the wrong questions.”

A thought sparked and she winced before she whispered, “What am I?”

Her companion’s square head inclined before she hissed. “Alone.”

The flames between them rose up, pushed them apart and Rabbit stumbled back, falling into the sand. It shifted around her, covering her arms and legs and tugged her backwards, downwards. She struggled against that sucking sand and the fire before her doused and forced her to catch her breath as she was thrown into darkness.

She blinked and opened her eyes to find herself sitting upright in bed, the sheets wound around her body and her chest rising and falling with her frantic breaths. The tightness in her stomach loosened as the endorphin rush began to fade and she frowned at her surroundings and freed a hand from the sheets to wipe at her damp forehead. She swallowed past a dry throat and pushed at the flannel that bound her body. With her heart still heavy and full in her chest she pulled herself free and out of her bed to make her way from the room.

Mindless of her nudity, Rabbit welcomed the chilled air that swept in from the window she left partially open in the living room. Shaking her head, she marveled at the way the temperature rose to the nineties during the day only to fall into the low fifties at night. With a shrug of her bare shoulders she stepped onto the chilled kitchen floor and made her way toward the refrigerator and a midnight—she check the red numbers on the stove and corrected—three am snack.

She didn’t want to go back to bed, not yet. She needed to focus, remember and since the knot in her stomach had loosened Rabbit wanted food too.

The End.
