The most important things to remember about back story are that (a) everyone has a history and (b) most of it isn’t very interesting.” —Stephen King

That being said I’m working on the 10 questions you should ask every character and I fully intend to subject you all to my answers as I work my way through the characters of my original series. Stay tuned. ;)

Questions:
1. How old is she/he? (And how old is she mentally? Is she a 40 year old in the body of a sixteen year old, or vice versa?)
2. Did she/he have a happy childhood? Why/why not?
3. Past/ present relationships? How did they affect her/him?
4. What does she/he care about?
5. What is she/he obsessed with?
6. Biggest fear?
7. What is the best thing that ever happened to her/him? The worst?
8. Most embarrasing thing that ever happened to her/him?
9. Biggest secret?
10. What is the one word you would use to define her/him?

(I'm certain there are other questions. Possibly ones that are more in-depth, but for the 'guest star' characters I think these work nicely. Bryn and Lotte will likely be subjected the 35 question list I found.)

Great idea, I'm going to have to remember to do this if I ever start writing again. *adds to writing resources memories*

Thanks! It felt like most writers should have files on all their characters for easy reference and they should update them with each story. I wish Laurell K Hamilton had done that so she didn't randomly make gay characters straight or change the color of the eyes or skin. ;)
